Wonderlust Christmas
"Wonderlust Christmas"
Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year. It is the season of perpetual hope, of good news and it is also a time where the world noticeable pauses for a moment to think about other people, to share stories and updates with friends and family something we get so far away from over the course of the year. It's probably more of a domestic thing than worldly but holistically and culturally western society eases up a bit to allow genuine joy to seap through the barriers of everyday hard work. People enjoy each other for a change instead of the things we have, want or try to sustain.
Nevertheless, as I have grown to appreciate this short annual moment, this year has been special for my family and I. Instead of exchanging gifts like weve always done our family decided to give each other the greatest gift of all in a cross country excursion. We decided to take a road trip from North Carolina to Northern California and back over two weeks. Crazy but not so much. We stopped at several places along the way where together we shared our first experiences in special places like the Grand Canyon. We spent Christmas eve in Oakland at an Oakland Raiders football game. The first time for all of us but, especially, for my dad and brother who are huge fans. For my dad this was a bucket list item to see his favorite team play outside of Duke in person, in their stadium, in "the black hole." The fans were ruckus and the chant or call "Raiii...derrrs" all game was enough for me say ok it's a diehard fan base. When one person called it several hundred responded. We always catch the Raiders every 4 or 5 years when they come east but this moment was classic because its one of those things you dont ever think you will do, especially, as a family. Unforgettable the moment.
On Christmas day we toured the Golden Gate Bridge and the beautiful city of San Francisco and now we are heading to Los Angeles a place that I love and has always been really good to me. I can say for sure it is the city of angels. In fact, I know several having lived and still do who are reading this blog right now :). A wonderlust Christmas it has been indeed and I have learned that dreams do come true when you least expect them and when you are present enough to appreciate what you have right in front of you with friends and family. Only then is when the universe surprises you with its best. I hope you have equally enjoyed your holiday as much as I have enjoyed mine.
